A Welcome from the Program Director:
Welcome to the website of one of the nation’s younger Emergency Medicine residencies—and as of September 2016, one of those to successfully make the transition from AOA to ACGME accreditation. Our mission is to provide a means for ambitious individuals to become well-rounded emergency physicians, highly adept at procedures and ultrasonography and possessing first-rate bedside manner and administrative skills.
My personal path here began thirty-seven years ago when I chose to enter emergency medicine (or, rather, it chose me) back when the field was still struggling for equal footing in the house of medicine. I’m thankful to say that those battles for recognition and credibility have long been won, but Emergency Medicine’s challenge now is to expand our numbers and strengthen the scientific data upon which we anchor the care of our patients.
I’ve had the privilege to practice in many EDs—from tiny mountain hospitals to a quaternary care teaching center—and I can say without reservation that Arnot is a special place. I left academia some years ago to run a regional EM group in Western New York State, and discovered first hand that we desperately needed more good emergency physicians outside the larger cities. When I met Arnot’s visionary GME director, Dr. Richard Terry, several years ago and learned of his desire to begin an EM program here, I could think of nothing more I wanted to do. Our hope is that many of our graduates will remain in the area to become our working colleagues.
We are indebted to our first class of residents, who will soon be graduating. They understood the challenges facing a brand new program and chose to match here anyway, putting their hearts into helping us grow and prepare for the ACGME transition. We owe that feat to them. Our second year’s class is now well into their R3 year and progressing wonderfully, making contributions to the program every day. All of our residents--present and future--will help blaze a wide and sturdy trail for those to follow.
